Resolution on South Africa

RESOLUTION ON SOUTH AFRICA

 

Deploring the increasing spate of arrests, detentions, torture, murder and imprisonment of South African Patriots by the apartheid regime because of their opposition to its criminal policies,

Hailing the heroic struggle being waged by the oppressed people of South Africa against forced removals, bantustans, so-called “resettlement centers” and other inhuman measures such as the de-nationalization of the indigenous majority,

Welcoming the decision of the United Nations Special Committee Against Apartheid to launch a wider and stronger campaign for the release of Nelson Mandela, Zephania Mothopeng and all other South African political prisoners and to promote the just struggle of the oppressed people of South Africa,

Having heard the statement from the Secretary-General of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), Mr Denis Akumu, Noting with satisfaction the intensive industrial activities being waged against apartheid by South African workers:

 

  1. COMMENDS ONCE MORE the people of South Africa for their sustained militant opposition to their oppression and the National Liberation Movements of South Africa for their continued mobilization of the oppressed people and for the ANC’S intensification of the armed struggle;
  2. UNEQUIVICALLY CONDEMNS the so-called constitutional proposals as a fraud and designed to further entrench apartheid;
  3. CALLS UPON so-called Coloureds and people of Asian origin to stand firm on their rejection of the so-called constitutional proposals;
  4. FURTHER COMMENDS the Frontline and other neighboring States for their sacrifices to achieve the total liberation of Africa and calls upon all peace-loving people of the world to render all forms of assistance to these States;
  5. CONDEMNS the racist regime’s continuing campaign of assassinations against South African patriots, both in South Africa and in neighboring Frontline and other countries in the region and in particular:
    1. the 1983 aerial bombardment of factories and residential areas in the Mozambican capital, Maputo which resulted in the death of innocent civilians which included one child, a pregnant woman and a South African refugee and the wounding of 32 citizens of that country;
  6. CONDEMNS the actions and policies of the United States of America concerning South Africa and regard them as constituting an unholy alliance with the apartheid regime in its repression of the oppressed people of South Africa and its acts of aggression, subversion and terrorism against the Frontline and neighboring States;
  7. REITERATES that the principal cause of the problem in Southern Africa is the inhuman and repugnant policies of apartheid pursued by the racist regime of South Africa and that only its total eradication can lead to genuine peace and security in the region;
  8. STRONGLY CONDEMNS some Western Countries, especially the United States of America and Britain, as well as Israel, Multinational Corporations and International Finance Institutions for their co-operation and links with the racist regime of South Africa as such links have contributed to the racists adopting intransigent and aggressive policies;
  9. CALLS UPON Governments and the international community to individually and collectively work for the imposition of comprehensive and mandatory sanctions against the South African regime;
  10. APPEALS to governments and the international community to undertake vigorous action to halt the continuing persecution, execution, imprisonment, trial, detentions torture and murder of South African patriots by the security services of the apartheid regime, which has so far resulted in the deaths in detention of over 60 detainees in the past twenty years;
  11. CALLS ON the international community to intensify action to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Nelson Mandela, Zephania Mothopeng and all other south African prisoners and that:
    1. captured freedom fighters be granted prisoners-of -war status in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Geneva Conventions;
    2. the apartheid regime stops all its continuing persecution and harassment of all South African patriots;
  12. COMMENDS the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid for having renewed the campaign for the release of all political prisoners and CALLS ON UN Member States, the OAU and the international community as a whole to intensify the campaign to secure the immediate release of all political prisoners in South Africa, and WELCOMES the decision of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid to observe the 25th Founding Anniversary of the PAC of Azania;
  13. CALLS ON the international community once more to intensify its material and moral support to the people of South Africa, through their National Liberation Movements so as to bring about the speedy eradication of the evil scourge of apartheid and its continuing threat to the peace and security of the world;
  14. REAFFIRMS its unflagging support for the struggle of the people of South Africa and pledges to increase assistance to the Liberation Movements recognized by the OAU;
  15. NOTES WITH SATISFACTION the decision by the Special Committee Against Apartheid to promote the observance of 1984 as the year of South African Women and URGES Member States to facilitate the pursuance of this objective in their respective countries;
  16. CALLS UPON the OATUU to mobilize national and international Trade Union Movements and to give them all moral and material support;
  17. REQUESTS the OATUU to keep the Frontline States and the National Liberation Movements of South Africa and the Liberation Committee informed of the activities of some foreign trade unions which are operating in South Africa.
