Resolution on African Candidatures to International Organizations and African Solidarity

CM/Res.907 (XXXVIII)

RESOLUTION ON AFRICAN CANDIDATURES TO INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND AFRICAN SOLIDARITY

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Thirty- eighth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 22 to 28 February, 1982,

Gratified by the decisions usually taken by the Organization of African Unity to submit common African candidatures either to host the Headquarters of international bodies or more generally international organizations in the name of African solidarity,

Recognizing that such an initiative is likely to establish the credibility of the OAU and consolidate African Unity,

Regretting that on several occasions this African solidarity has not always worked in spite of relevant resolutions adopted by the 0AU,

Having heard the statement of the representative of the Republic of Gabon:

APPEALS to all Member States of the OAU to scrupulously observe the fundamental principle of solidarity as contained in Article II (a) of the Charter whenever candidatures for posts or for hosting international organizations are submitted to and approved by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
