RESOLUTION ON THE ADOPTION OF PORTUGUESE AS A WORKING LANGUAGE OF THE OAU


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Fortieth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 27 February to 5 March 1984,


Having considered the question of adopting Portuguese as a working language of the OAU, contained in Document CM/1232(XL) Add.1,


Recalling its Resolution CM/Res.763 (XXXIII) adopted in Monrovia, Liberia, by the Council of Ministers at its Thirty-third Ordinary Session from 6 – 20 July 1979 which recommended that the question of the introduction of Portuguese as a working language of the OAU be dealt in conformity with the provision of Article XXXIII of the Charter of the Organization of African Unity,


Taking into consideration the number of Member States which use Portuguese as official language,


Conscious of the importance attached to the adoption of Portuguese as a working language by the Portuguese speaking countries and the Organization itself:


  1. REAFFIRMS by acclamation its earlier decision to introduce Portuguese as a working language of the OAU;


  1. APPEALS to the Member States to send as soon as possible to the General Secretariat, their reply to letter CAB/CM/35/86.84 of 1 February 1984 on the adoption of Portuguese as a working language of the OAU in conformity with the provision of Article (XXXIII) of the Charter of the Organization of African Unity.
