RESOLUTION ON THE PREPARATION OF AN INTERNATIONAL HYDROGEOLOGICAL MAP OF AFRICA
The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Fortieth
Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 27 February to 5 March 1984,
Having heard the report of the Secretary-General a.i. on the Second Meeting of Experts on Cartography and Hydrogeology held in Dakar, Senegal from 5 to 11 December 1983,
Recalling its Resolutions CM/Res.336 (XXIII), CM/Res.450 (XXV) and CM/Res.702
(XXXII) adopted by the Twenty-third, Twenty-fifth and Thirty-second Ordinary Sessions, which called on the Association of African Cartography to implement on behalf of the OAU, the project on the preparation of an International Hydrogeological Map of Africa,
Noting with satisfaction the progress being made so far by the AAC towards the realization of this noble project,
Conscious of the fact that the materialization of this project would enhance current efforts being deployed to combat drought and desertification in Africa:
WARMLY CONGRATULATES the Secretary-General of the Association of African Cartographers (AAC) and his Organization for the excellent work done so far towards realization of this vital project;
FULLY SUPPORTS the programme of work formulated by the Second Meeting of Experts for the implementation of the project;
INVITES the Secretary-General of the OAU to provide the necessary Financial Assistance to AAC and ensure OAU’s full participation in all the AAC activities related to this project;
FURTHER INVITES the AAC to intensify its continued co-operation with national, sub-regional, regional, international, inter-governmental and non- governmental organizations as well as non-African countries involved in this project;
CALLS ON the Secretary-General of the OAU, in collaboration with the Secretary-General of AAC, to seek other funding sources for the implementation of this project;
REQUESTS the Secretary-General of the OAU to submit a progress report on the preparation of the International Hydrogeological Map of Africa to the Forty-second Ordinary Session of the OAU Council of Ministers.
