RESOLUTION ON THE JOINT FAO/WHO/OAU REGIONAL FOOD AND NUTRITION COMMISSION FOR AFRICA, SECOND AND THIRD

SESSIONS



The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Fortieth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 27 February to 5 March 1984,


Taking cognizance of the Report of the Second and Third Sessions of the Joint FAO/WHO/OAU Regional Food and Nutrition Commission for Africa held in Accra, Ghana, 8 to 11 December 1981 and in Cairo, Egypt, from 24 to 26 October

1983, respectively:



  1. EXPRESSES its thanks to FAO for convening the Second and Third Sessions and to the Joint Secretariat for its support to the Joint Commission ever since the holding of the First Session in 1974;


  1. NOTES with concern the current critical food and nutrition situation throughout Africa and the poor prospects for the present;


  1. ENDORSES the conclusions and recommendations of the Second and Third Sessions of the Joint Commission;


  1. URGES all Member States to intensify their efforts towards food self – sufficiency as resolved in the OAU Lagos Plan of Action; to integrate food nutritional consideration in programmes of rural and agricultural development and primary health care, and to undertake within the current five year period multi-sectoral activities for the formulation of national food and nutrition strategies and Programmes, in co-operation with the Joint Secretariat of the Joint FAO/WHO/OAU regional Food and Nutrition Commission for Africa;

  1. URGES the Joint Secretariat to seek and mobilize the necessary resources and support for its approved programme of work of the Joint Secretariat for 1984 to 1985; and to implement the programme without delay;


  1. URGES all Member States of the OAU to join the Joint Commission and set up a liaison office to serve as a link between Member States and the Joint Secretariat of the Commission.
