Resolution on Afro-Arab Co-operation


CM/Res.1008 (XLII) RESOLUTION ON AFRO-ARAB CO-OPERATION

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Forty- second Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 10 to 17 July, 1985,


Having thoroughly considered the report of the Secretary-General a.i. on Afro-Arab Co-operation Doc.CM/1309 (XLII),


Bearing always in mind the Declaration and the Programme of Action as well as the other decisions and resolutions adopted by the First Afro-Arab Summit Conference held in Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt, in March 1977,


Recalling Resolution CM/Res.961 (XLI) adopted at its Forty-first Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 February to 4 March 1985,


Taking note of the postponement sine die of the First Joint Afro-Arab Ministerial Conference scheduled to be held in Tripoli, Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, in April 1985, as a result of the problem that had arisen within the League of Arab States,


Expressing satisfaction at the successful results achieved in the field of Afro-Arab co-operation both at the bilateral and multilateral levels despite the difficulties encountered in the functioning of the organs set up for this purpose by the First Afro-Arab Summit,


Determined nevertheless to make all efforts aimed at strengthening the aims and objectives of Afro-Arab Co-operation as defined by the First Afro-Arab Summit Conference in March 1977:


  1. TAKES NOTE of the report of the Secretary-General a.i. on Afro-Arab Co- operation Doc. CM/1309 (XLII);

  1. CONGRATULATES the host country, the Co-ordination Committee and the two Secretaries-General of the OAU and the League of Arab States on all the efforts made and the measures taken to ensure the material and technical organization of the First Session of the Joint Afro-Arab Ministerial Conference;


  1. THANKS the two Secretaries-General of the OAU and the League of Arab States for the steps taken to find a solution to the problem of the postponement sine die of this Conference, and URGES them to pursue their efforts towards this end;


  1. REQUESTS the OAU Secretary-General in close co-operation with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States to take all the necessary measures so as to ensure the normal functioning of the other organs of Afro- Arab Co-operation, particularly the Standing Commission whose eighth session is scheduled to be held in Damascus, Arab Syrian Republic, from 30 to 31 October 1985.
