RESOLUTION ON THE CURRENT SITUATION IN SOUTH AFRICA


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Forty- first Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 25 February to 4 March 1985,


Having learnt with indignation of the recent massacre of Africans at Crossroads in South Africa peacefully demonstrating against forceful removals by the racist authorities resulting in more than twenty people being killed and over two hundred injured,


Outraged by the death sentences imposed on SIPHO BRIDGET XULU and CLARANCE FAITH PAYI, two members of the ANC, including the continuing killings of the oppressed Africans in South Africa, its support for all forms of struggle including the armed struggle being waged for the liberation of the people of South Africa,


Gravely concerned at the current mass arrests, detentions and spate of treason and security trials stage managed by the regime against opponents of apartheid, including prominent leaders of the United Democratic Front like Albertina Sisulu, Co-President of the UDF and others,


Aware of the conditional offer to release Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners:


  1. SUPPORTS the legitimate struggle being waged by the National Liberation Movements in all its forms including the armed struggle for the liberation of the people of South Africa;


  1. HAILS the categorical rejection by Nelson Mandela of the conditional offer of release and denounces this as a new dilatory maneuver;

  1. REITERATES its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Nelson Mandela, Zephania Mothopeng and other political prisoners;


  1. CALLS ON the Secretary-General in conjunction with other international and regional organizations to intensify the international campaign for the release of these freedom fighters;


  1. CONDEMNS MOST VEHEMNTLY the death sentences imposed by the Pretoria regime on Sipho Bridget Xulu and Clarance Faith Payi, members of the ANC;


  1. REJECTS AND DENOUNCES in the strongest terms this dastardly act of the racist regime and demands that the death sentences imposed on them be set aside and that they be treated as prisoners of war in accordance with the Geneva Protocols;


  1. VIGOROUSLY CONDEMNS the wanton murder of defenceless demonstrators killed at Crossroads who were protesting against the forced removals designed to denationalize, dispossess and relocate the African majority to so-called homelands;


  1. STRONGLY CONDEMNS the racist regime for its continued campaign of repression against the opponents of apartheid in particular members of the United Democratic Front;


  1. STRONGLY CONDEMNS the continued acts of repression, detention and summary trials, and the covert attempts to create discord and split the ranks of the National Liberation Movements;


  1. ENTRUSTS the African Group at the UN to convene an urgent meeting of the Security Council to examine this grave situation prevailing in South Africa.
