RESOLUTION ON INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION IN AFRICA


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Forty- first Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 25 February to 4 March 1985,


Having heard the Report of the Secretary-General on International Co-operation for the Development of Education in Africa, (CM/1166 (XLI),


Recalling conclusions of the Fifth Conference of African Ministers of Education and Economic Planning held in Harare (Zimbabwe) from 26 June to 3 July 1982,


Recalling the objectives that Member States have set for themselves in the Lagos Plan of Action with regard to the development of human resources and the role of Education,


Conscious of the importance of international co-operation in the field of Education:



  1. ADOPTS the Report of the General Secretariat and the proposals contained therein;


  1. CALLS ON the Secretary-General of the OAU to take the necessary steps to convene, in co-operation with the Advisory Committee on Administrative, Financial and Budgetary Matters, the OAU Commission on Education, Science, Culture and Health;


  1. CALLS ON UNESCO, UNDP and other international or inter-African Organizations to assist the General Secretariat of the OAU with a view to ensuring the successful implementation of the proposals contained in the Report referred to above (CM/1266 (XLI));

  1. REQUESTS the OAU Secretary-General to ensure the necessary co- ordination among the various sub-regional educational and training institutions;


  1. APPEALS to Member States to intensify their co-operation in the field of education.
