Resolution on the World Women Conference


CM/Res.985 (XLI) RESOLUTION ON THE WORLD WOMEN CONFERENCE

The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Forty- first Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 25 February to 4 March 1985,


Having heard the rapporteur’s report of Committee B on Agenda Item (d) relating to the report of the Secretary-General a.i. on the African Regional Women Conference held in Arusha, Tanazania in October 1984 in preparation for the 1985 World Women Conference in July 1985,


Conscious of the active participation of women in the liberation struggle of the African continent and their role in Africa’s development,


Considering the programme of activity contained in Chapter XII of the Lagos Plan of Action on Women and development,


Further considering the numerous activities undertaken by the Pan-African Women Organization (PAWO) as part of the United Nations Women Decade and the implementation of the Lagos Plan of Action,


Conscious of the honour and privilege it is for Africa to host in July1985 in Nairobi, Republic of Kenya, the World Women Conference that will examine the contribution of all regions of the world towards the attainment of the objectives of the United Nations Women’s Decade:


  1. COMMENDS the Secretariats of the OAU, ECA and the Pan-African Women’s Organization for the efforts they have made to facilitate the harmonization of their positions on items included in the Agenda of the World Women Conference;

  1. APPEALS URGENTLY to all OAU Member States to give special attention to the preparation for this Conference, to participate in it at the highest level and to ensure as far as possible that their delegations are led by women;


  1. URGES the OAU Secretary-General a.i. to support by all means possible the actions undertaken by the Pan-African Women’s Organization to realize the objectives of the United Nations Women’s Decade and those of the Lagos Plan of Action;


  1. REQUESTS the OAU Secretary-General a.i. and the ECA Executive Secretary to support fully and to pool all the necessary resources in order to ensure maximum African participation in the World Women Conference with a view to defending the African stand adopted at the Arusha Regional Conference on the vital problems facing African Women;


  1. REQUESTS the Advisory Committee on Administrative, Budgetary and Financial Matters to take the necessary steps to make available to the Pan- African Women’s Organization the subvention normally granted by the OAU to such programmes of activity to enable the Organization to contribute positively and effectively to the participation of African women in the World Women Conference in NAIROBI.
