RESOLUTION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF CHEIKH ANTA DIOP PRIZE FOR AFRICAN SCIENTIFIC RENAISSANCE


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity meeting in its Forty- fourth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 21 to 26 July 1986,


Recalling the Resolutions and decisions adopted by the United Nations Conference on Science and Technology for Development held in Vienna in August 1979,


Recalling the Recommendations of the first Conference of Ministers responsible for the Application of Science and Technology in Africa organized in Dakar, Senegal, in January 1974 (Castafrica I),


Recalling the importance of the contribution by African Scientists and its impact when fully used for development purposes,


Recalling Resolution CM/Res.1038 adopted by the Forty-third Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity paying tribute to Prof. Cheikh Anta Diop,


Desirous of encouraging and stimulating the spirit of creativity among African researchers,


Having heard the Report of the OAU Secretary-General:



  1. HAILS the initiative taken by the Secretary-General and thanks the African experts who have helped him in this regard;


  1. DECIDES to institute a Cheikh Anta Diop prize for African Scientific Renaissance to promote creativity, technical inventions, research and development and to encourage scientific and technological inventions;

  1. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to study modalities for awarding this


prize, jointly with African Scientists during the First Congress of African Scientists.
