RESOLUTION ON SENEGAL’S CANDIDATURE TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Forty-sixth Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 20 to 25 July 1987,


Recalling the conclusions of the Forty-fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers held in Addis Ababa from 23 – 28 February 1987 which, on the basis of the report of the Ministerial Committee on Candidatures, postponed the consideration of candidatures in respect of the West African seat on the Security Council so as to facilitate consultations on the matter,


Having considered the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on Candidatures, adopted at its meeting of 23 July 1987, concerning the candidature of Senegal to the Security Council,


Having observed that no other OAU Member State has submitted a candidature for the seat in question,


Taking into account the determination of Member States of the Organization to always present a united front concerning candidatures to various international bodies:


  1. APPROVES the recommendation of the Ministerial Committee on Candidatures;


  1. DECIDES unanimously to endorse the candidature of Senegal to the Security Council;


  1. MANDATES the African Group at the United Nations to take the necessary steps to ensure the implementation of this decision during the elections which will take place during the Forty-second Ordinary Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
