RESOLUTION ON FRONTLINE AND OTHER NEIGHBORING STATES



The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Fifty- second Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 3 – 8 July 1990,


Having considered the reports of the Secretary-General and the Fifty-fourth Ordinary Session of the Liberation Committee on the Situation in the Frontline and other Neighboring States,


Gravely concerned over the continuing volatile situation in Southern Africa engendered by the obnoxious system of apartheid,


Fully aware of the huge sacrifices which the Frontline States continue to make in the course of the struggle for the total liberation of Africa,


Noting with satisfaction the successful conclusion of the Namibian independence process:


  1. WELCOMES Namibia’s independence as a victory for Africa’s collective efforts and the struggle of the People of Namibia against colonialism and apartheid and CONGRATULATES His Excellency Dr. Sam Nujoma on his unanimous election as first President of the Republic of Nam ibia;


  1. COMMENDS the Frontline and other neighboring States for their support to Namibia until its accession to independence and their continued sacrifices and support to the People South Africa in their struggle against apartheid and colonialism;


  1. CODEMNS the United Nations for its central role in Namibia’s independence process and the international community for its firm commitment and support;


  1. CALLS UPON the United Nations and the international community at large to continue extending all-round assistance to the new nation of Namibia to enable it to consolidate the institutions of Government and ensure security and economic development in the country;


  1. REAFFIRMS that Walvis Bay and the islands off-mainland Namibia constitutes an integral part of the terr itory of Namibia whose southern borders extend into the Orange River;

  1. COMDEMNS the racist Pretoria regime for its continued acts of aggression, intimidation, destabilization and blackmail against the Frontline and other neighboring States, and demands an immediate end to the Pretoria regime’s support to puppet groups in Angola and Mozambique;


  1. REITERATES its appeal to the international community to support efforts by the Government of Angola and Mozambique to bring about reco nciliation and normalization of life in the two countries;


  1. FUTHER REITERATES its appeal to the international community to increase financial and material assistance to the Frontline and other neighboring States to enable them to withstand South Africa’s a cts of aggression, intimidation, blackmail and destabilization.
