RESOLUTION ON THE AWARD OF GOLD MEDALS TO AFRICAN INVENTORS


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Fifty -third Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 February to 1 March 1991,


Recalling that an agreement had been concluded in 1977 between the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to promote intellectual creativity in Africa,


Recalling resolution CM/Res.1049 (XLIV) of the Council of Ministers relating to th e institution of a Cheikh Anta Diop Prize for African Scientific Renaissance,


Desirous of encouraging and promoting scientific creativity and innovation in Africa,


Having considered Report CM/1651 (LIII) of the Secretary-General of the OAU on the Award of Gold Medals to African Inventors:


  1. TAKES NOTE of the proposals contained in the Report of the Secretary - General of the OAU (Doc. CM/1651 (LIII)) relating to the award of gold Medals to African inventors and EXPRESSES SATISFACTION with the Fact that this action falls within the framework of the Cheikh Anta Diop Prize for African Scientific Renaissance, particularly regarding the work of Invention;


  1. EXPRESSES its heartfelt gratitude to WIPO for its invaluable contri bution to the OAU and its Member States;


  1. REQUESTS the Secretary-General of the OAU, in collaboration with the World International Property Organization (WIPO) and the Institutions Concerned, namely, the PAN-AFRICAN UNION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (PUST), THE AFRICAN REGIONAL CENTER FOR TECHNOLOGY (ARCT), THE AFRICAN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION (AIPO) and THE AFRICAN REGIONAL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ORGANIZATION (ARIPO) to maintain the

Project for awarding gold medals to African inventors for two years.
