RESOLUTION ON THE AFRICAN NETWORK FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR INDUSTRIAL USE


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Fifty -third Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 25 February to 1 March 1991,


Having considered the report of the Secretary-General contained in Document CM/1654 (LIII) on the Project of the African Network for Research and Development of Medicinal Plants for Industrial Use, which ahs enabled the publication of the first two volumes of the African Pharmacopoeia,


Recalling the previous resolutions adopted in field of Health (CM/Res.947 (XL)) on the preparation of the First African pharmacopoeia and CM/Res.1109 (XLVI) on Health, factor for Development,


Convinced of the major role that the supply of cheap pharmaceutical products derived from our natural resources can play in meeting the primary health needs of the population in Africa,


Aware of the scrupulous application of the provisions of the Lagos Plan of Action aimed at ensuring self-sufficiency in all fields:


  1. APPROVES the Project of the establishment of an African Network for Research and Development of Medicinal Plants for Industrial Use as well as The various steps proposed for its implementation;


  1. INVITES AND ENCOURAGES all Member States, through their specialized institutions, to lend the STRC Executive Secretariat the required support both at the preliminary stage and at the stage of the realization of the Project;


  1. THANKS UNIDO for its contribution and URGES it to continue in that direction;


  1. CALLS UPON all International Organizations MORE PARTICULARLY on WHO, ECA, UNDP to lend their cooperation, technical and financial support To the implementation of this vital project for Africa;


  1. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to take all necessary measures for the execution of the various stages of the Project.
