RESOLUTION ON SIERRA LEONE


The Council of Ministers of the Organization of African Unity, meeting in its Sixty-Third Ordinary Session in-Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 26 to 28 February 1996,

Having considered the Report of the Secretary-General on Sierra Leone as contained in document CM/1912(LXIII)D as well as its Annex,

Having hear the statement of the delegation of Sierra Leone on the prevailing situation in Sierra Leone,

Deeply concerned about the on-going war in Sierra Leone whereby the high loss of life, large-scale destruction of property and massive displacement of the civilian population within the country, as well as the mass exodus of Sierra Leonean refugees into the neighbouring countries have continued to occur,

Welcoming the expression of confidence on the part of the RUF in the OAU in assisting in the search for a lasting solution to the current situation, including the facilitation of dialogue:

  1. REITERATES its grave concern over the continuing tragic war in Sierra Leone;


  1. CALLS ON the warring Parties to declare an immediate cease fire;


  1. APPEALS to the warring Parties to follow up their expression of confidence in the intervention of the OAU, neighbouring countries and other international bodies by continuing with the on-going negotiations;

  2. COMMENDS the Government of Sierra Leone for facilitating and creating conducive conditions for the conduct of elections and the democratization process that is now being pursued;

  3. FURTHER APPEALS to Member States and to the international community to provide humanitarian assistance to Sierra Leonean refugees and internally displaced persons;

  4. REQUESTS the Secretary-General to continue to monitor closely the situation in Sierra Leone and report thereon to the Sixty-Fourth Ordinary Session of Council.
