Recommendations on the situation in Tunisia

The Pan-African Parliament,CONCERNED by the political situation in Tunisia;ACKNOWLEDGING that the revolution in Tunisia was a legitimate response to the desperate economic hardships resulting from economic mismanagement and lack of democratic space;NOTING that the reasons behind the revolution were corruption, unemployment, corruption and lack of media freedom and human rights violations;PAYING TRIBUTE to the Tunisian Army that played a major role in protecting the Tunisian Revolution especially after the departure of Ben Ali;TAKING NOTE of the installation of the Interim Government which includes Political parties and Civil Society Organizations and Labour Unions;RECALLING the Report of its Fact-Finding Mission to Tunisia in June 2011 which is based on its Resolution adopted during the Fourth Ordinary Session of the Second Parliament in May 2011;NOTING the political progress made towards the establishment of a democratic state;ENCOURAGED by the preparations of the upcoming elections to be held on October 23, 2011 to elect a Constituent Assembly which will have three tasks to choose a President; appoint the Council of Ministers, "which will be temporary" and drafting of the Constitution;TAKING NOTE of the support of the International and regional organizations to straighten the Tunisian economy;
THEREFORE RECOMMENDS that:
1.The African Union should assist Tunisia in its transition to democratic rule;
2.The African Union should ensure that the road map to election is adhered to, in order to form a constitutional government;
3.The International Community should support Tunisia economically in order to alleviate unemployment and poverty to avoid a counter-revolution;
4.The Tunisian media should play a prominent role in the democratization of the country by being objective, factual and unimpeachable; and
