Resolution on the appreciation of the intervention of the Chairperson of the African Union in the Togo crisis

The Pan-African Parliament,1.RECALLING the attempted military coup d’etat in Togo, following the death of President Gnassingbé Eyadema and the changes that were made in violation of the Togolese Constitution;2.RECALLING the African Union Declaration of July 2000 on the Unconstitutional Changes of Governments;3.TAKING INTO ACCOUNT the principle enshrined in Article 4(p) of the African Union Constitutive Act, as well as the principles contained in the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council;4.EXPRESSING deep appreciation for the actions undertaken by H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo, President of the African Union by requesting the strict compliance with the constitutional principles in Togo, an action which brought about the restoration of the rule of law in that country;5.RECOGNISING that the actions of H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo, which demonstrated his firm commitment to the rule of law, have contributed to the prevention of political turmoil in Togo and the maintenance of peace and security in the Western African Region, in particular, and Africa in general;
THEREFORE COMMENDS, H.E. President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Chairperson of the African Union, for his courageous and principled actions.
