Decision Relating to the Implementation of the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community


DECISION ON THE
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE
TREATY ESTABLISHING THE
AFRICAN
ECONOMIC COMMUNITY (AEC)

Council:

  1. TAKES NOTES of the Report;

  2. REITERATES ITS REQUEST to the Member States which have not yet done so, to ratify or accede to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community as expeditiously as possible;

  3. REQUESTS Member States, the General Secretariat and the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to effectively implement all Community Decisions and Regulations, as well as the recommendations of the Committee on Coordination;

  4. ALSO REQUESTS the General Secretariat, in collaboration with the RECs, the ECA, the ADB and BADEA, to identify projects having regional and continental coverage, and propose measures for their implementation;

  5. EXPRESSES APPRECIATION to the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) for the financial assistance it has continued to provide for strengthening the capacity of OAU and the Regional Economic Communities in the implementation of programmes of regional integration and development;

  6. ALSO EXPRESSES APPRECIATION to the UNDP for its continued financial support to the OAU in the implementation of the Treaty establishing the AEC;

  7. URGES the UNDP to formulate, with the OAU, a new programme of assistance, in support of the establishment and functioning of

the African Union, including the accelerated implementation of the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community;

  1. ENCOURAGES the General Secretariat to exert more effort at the mobilization of extra-budgetary resources in support of the priority programmes of the Organization.
