The conference of the Africa regional bloc of the International Association of Judges gets under way in Cape Town on 2 June 2019. A major theme of the five-day event is judicial independence, as well as factors that impact on the ability of judges to do their work properly - their competence and their welfare for example.

Not surprising then that the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit at the University of Cape Town will be a significant presence at the gathering, along with one of its own projects, the Judicial Institute for Africa (Jifa).

Jifa has been assisting with the organization of the conference, and its staffers will be in attendance to meet participants, discuss the situation in their local jurisdictions and answer questions about how we can be of help to judges across the continent.

We will be signing up new subscriptions (free of charge) to the weekly Jifa newsletter that showcases new decisions and case law across Africa. The newsletter is also an essential tool for judicial networking and for supporting judges under pressure from their governments or whose independence is threatened in other ways.

The Jifa stand at the conference promises to be a gathering spot for judicial officers from the 30 countries expected to attend, all wanting to browse our literature, find out more about upcoming courses and to have their say about the issues that make – or mar – their work. See you there!
